The spring 2004 Couture auction features numerous exquisite examples of both American and European fashion design and construction. From the personal collection of the Marquesa de San Damian is a selection of couture from the early 1960s, including Givenchy’s backless bulb dress, a unique floral beaded Pucci shift dress, Dior couture ensembles from autumn/winter 1961, a jeweled bodice gown and metallic striped pant suit from Valentino's first collection, and other inspired outfits by Balenciaga and Chanel. From the estate of designer Pauline Trigere are items from her private museum collection, among them a pearl embroidered champagne satin halter dress from 1950 and a floral print cotton beach ensemble. English designer Ossie Clark, celebrated in a recent retrospective at London’s V&A Museum, is represented by an early 1970s black chiffon wrap long dress with a Celia Birtwell tulip discharge print. Also featured is Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s early 1980s grey wool stylised Crombie double-breasted coat for World's End. American luxury is represented by Galanos, Norell, Giorgio di Sant Angelo and Claire McCardell among others. A highlight of the early pieces in the auction is Paul Poiret’s rare shimmering metallic weave lime and gold shantung aba, an example of which is illustrated in Poiret by Yvonne Deslandres. In addition, the sale includes handbags by Hermes and Pucci, cases by Louis Vuitton, and a fine assortment of costume jewelry, accessories and world textiles.
