FIT Presents Student Fashion Show on December 5th:

FIT will present its biannual student fashion show on Thursday, December
5, at 5:30 pm in the college's Katie Murphy Amphitheatre. Approximately
100 prospective Fashion Design graduates will showcase their creative
designs for spring 2003 in four areas of specialization. The runway
show is the final project for Fashion Design students who have completed
a two-year program and will receive their associate degrees in December.

Notable designers from the fashion world act as critics and work with
faculty and students in their classes throughout the fall semester.
This year's critics are Sully Bonnelly (Current Scene), Marc Bouwer
(Evening Wear), George Samen (Tailored Garments), and Elie Tahari
(Sportswear). A critic award is presented to one student in each
specialization.

Spring 2003 fashions will premiere at the show, which is by invitation
only and not open to the public.

All members of the press are invited to attend (there will be no
backstage access) and should rsvp to the FIT Office of College Relations
at (212) 217-7642.

Just in time for the holidays...

Sunny Chapman Design will be exhibiting in Booth #6 along with 40 of the "nation's top vintage dealers'' at the Metropolitan Pavillion Holiday Clothing Show held at the Metropolitan Pavillion, 125 West 18th street, between 6th and 7th avenues. Following Thanksgiving, the scheduled days are Saturday, November 30th from 1pm to 7pm, and Sunday, December 1st, from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission is $20.

Sunny is especially proud of her selection of holiday perfect 'party wear' and evening bags, but is equally pleased with her daywear. Labels include Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass, Pauline Trigere, Balenciaga, Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, Holly Harp, Bonnie Cashin, Oleg Cassini, Ceil Chapman, and Carlos Falchi.

I'm sure that if you pay attention, you will be able to spot many of fashion's biggest 'stars' (including Marc Jacobs, who has long referenced past eras for inspiration). Unless, of course, they're all out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday.

More than 50 top chocolate makers and producers of chocolate-related products – such as coffees, teas, chocolate-friendly wines – as well as books and equipment for baking and chocolate making. Chocolate fashions, more than 40 culinary demonstrations by renowned pastry chefs and chocolatiers, book signings, chocolate sculptures and showpieces, educational exhibits and children’s activities. The event is being produced by Event International, a Paris-based promotional production company owned and managed by Sylvie Douce and François Jeantet. The First Salon du Chocolat was held in Paris in 1994. The first New York Chocolate Show was held in New York City in 1997. Attendance at the 4th Annual Chocolate Show in 2001 was 20,000 visitors.

The Triple Pier Antiques Show

The annual 'rite' of fall -The Triple Pier Antiques Show, held over two weekends in November, (at the west side Piers) - kicked off last Saturday, November 9th. It must have been more than highly anticipated, as the crowd spilled out into the streets just waiting until 11 a.m. when the doors opened! While I didn't spot any designers on Saturday, I did bump into Geoffrey Beene and Koos Van Den Akker on Sunday - which is actually a much more civilized day to check out the booths.

In general, I thought prices were still fairly good- better than retail- but are creeping higher each season, due to the increased popularity of, and the consumer's acceptance of vintage. I must say, I didn't find anything that I wanted to write a check for...but there's always next weekend.

It's a Plaid, Plaid, Plaid World:

Rose Marie Bravo was guest of honor and the host of a festive and elegant party Thursday night formally celebrating the opening of her crown jewel - the new Burberry flagship at 9 east 57th street. The six story, 24,000 square foot shop - which is literally a 'World of Burberry' - was aglow in candles and champagne, as guests (many of whom wore a Burberry item, or donned the famous Burberry plaid to fete the event) milled around eyeing the merchandise. Nadine Johnson, the publicist whose firm handled the event, did a first class job as usual.

Ms. Bravo chose a dramatic red satin floor length coat with a shot of the over-scaled Burberry plaid, several men were wearing one version or another of the fringed scarf, and I turned my Burberry trench inside out and let the plaid show. Well, okay, so Miguel Adrover did it first!

While we were not treated to Burberry trench coats as a party favor, each guest did receive a mini khaki trench belt, (the kind that decorates the cuff of a trench), which can be worn separately on the wrist, or around the neck…..or could even be used as a dog collar.

Going, Going, Gone...



At yesterday's Doyle New York Couture Textiles and Accessories auction, there was a lot of lively bidding, and with vintage becoming a viable alternative to retail, there was a lot of attention focused on the event. According to Jan Glier Reeder, Doyle's Couture Specialist, "We set a Doyle record for Fortuny this time with the fabulous biscuit white Delphos dress that came in the box AND, most rare, three cards from the Fortuny shop on Madison Avenue." This "once in a lifetime find" went for $12,000 - much higher than the estimated $5,000 to $7,000.

Alas, my absolute, hands down favorite piece...which I would have killed to own, was coincidentally the catalogue's cover - a Fabiani surrealist dress (click here to see photo) from the 60's, which featured a trompe l'oeil design of "two attenuated hands, one adorned with a large teardrop emerald glass stone ring with rhinestone baguettes." Estimated at pulling in somewhere between $1,000 to $1,500, it eventually found a home at $3,250. Ah, well!

The highest price for an item was actually $16,000 which went for an Emile Friant 'Portrait of Charles Frederick Worth', 1893, which, according to the catalgue, was owned, at one time, by Gabrielle Chanel, who hung it on a wall in her Paris apartment.

ANNOUNCE PLANS TO LAUNCH MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS LA

Director, Fern Mallis, announced plans to launch Mercedes-Benz Shows LA at a
press reception held this evening on the rooftop of the Downtown LA Standard

designers Richard Tyler, David Cardona and Bradley Bayou, fashion industry

7th on Sixth, the production company that produces the bi-annual
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, will assist the Los Angeles
fashion community to stage three days of runway shows in downtown Los
Angeles. "As we've been watching the creativity and energy of the LA
designers and the resurgence of the downtown area, we realized that the
talent here should be galvanized to help make LA a fashion destination for
the world's fashion press and buyers," said Mallis. With the success we've
experienced in New York we look forward to collaborating with these
designers to accomplish their mission to put LA on the world's fashion
schedule."

else in the world" remarked John Koehler, Regional Operations Manager for
Mercedes-Benz USA. "We are proud to sponsor fashion events that allow

"The New York showing of my collections was instrumental to our success,"
said designer Richard Tyler who also spoke at the press reception. "The
vision and generous work of the 7th on Sixth team brought so much more
exposure to all the designers who have participated in Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week. Individually, I feel it contributed to my receiving three CFDA awards.
Mercedes-Benz Shows LA coming to Los Angeles will not only give
opportunities to the designers and the fashion industry here, but to Los
Angeles as a whole."

Mercedes-Benz Shows LA Fall 2003 Collections will take place April 1st -
4th, 2003 at LA's hottest new hotel, the Downtown LA Standard. 7th on Sixth
plans to produce five to six shows a day in three venues, two inside the
hotel and one in a tent to be erected on the parking lot adjacent to the
hotel entrance. Additional information regarding size, capacity and cost of
the venues, along with amenities and benefits offered to designers and
guests of the shows will be announced at a later date.

In an effort to attract the most exceptional talent LA has to offer,
Mercedes-Benz Shows LA has created a steering committee comprised of a
small, select group of fashion and style leaders. This committee will
identify the most promising talent in the Los Angeles area who are deserving
of an underwritten show space, and will designate one designer each day for
the "Mercedes-Benz Shows LA presents...." show. In addition, the committee
will offer a general overview and advice on the balance of designers who
will be listed on the schedule.

Mercedes-Benz Shows LA will also establish a host committee comprised of
local leaders, influencers, fashion insiders and enthusiasts to lend their
name and support to this new fashion industry initiative.

Carine 'Watching':

Since everyone in the fashion industry seems to be so obsessed with Carine Roitfeld, and her personal style, I thought some of you might want to know that she paid two visits to Amarcord Vintage, one of my favorite shops, located at 84 east 7th street, within the last week. What did she buy? Some vintage Roberta di Camerino trompe l'oeil wallets (the shop 'specializes' in Roberta leather goods and clothing), a Ferre black top decorated with glitter, from the 80's, and a leather jacket. The shop, which I have reported on in the past, is frequently visited by those in the fashion business, and of course, many well known designers. But I suppose the one designer you won't see rummaging through the racks, is Geoffrey Beene, of whom Mary Lou Luther observed, "Geoffrey doesn't know the meaning of retro, and he never looks back."
